Nicotine Patches are usually used as a method to help quit smoking. They are transdermal patches (external - sticks to the skin) and they first appeared in 1993.

What they do is slowly release nicotine into the body through the skin.

Nicotine patches come in several dosages, for example, 21, 14, and 7 miligrams, so that users can phase out nicotine use. If you are a heavy smoker, then you should start with the 21 mg patch. Use it for a few weeks (atleast 4) before changing to a smaller dose of nicotine patches.

The transition of patches dosage should be slow and spread out over several weeks as to not shock the system. Nicotine patches are recommended to be worn for a 24 hour period before changing to a new patch.
